Hey ,
Back in March, Google switched to a mobile-only index. That means desktop websites have been kicked out of Google's index. Permanently.
Let's be honest: They deserved it. An overwhelming number of searches happen on mobile devices. Google went to mobile-first indexing in 2019 and warned us that they would eventually only promote mobile pages to searchers.
So what does this mean for your website?
• The only content that can be indexed and ranked is the content on your mobile site
•. If your desktop site has different content (e.g. images, text, videos), those assets have been dropped from the index entirely
• Desktop only websites will now be ignored by Googlebot
• m-dot versions of your mobile site will be penalized in the rankings, and Google may not be able to send desktop users from the SERPs to the desktop version
So if your mobile pages still don't feature your highest-quality content, it's time to take action.
Here's what you can do:
- Ensure that your mobile pages have high-quality content and are conversion-optimized
- Confirm that your mobile pages are high-performing! Test them out using Google's PSI tool. (This will also help you prepare for this month's Page Experience Update.)
- Consider implementing Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP), a powerful technical SEO optimization
